North Stradbroke Island's Traditional Owners
Sibelco Australia has established long-term relationships with NSI’s Traditional Owners. We are committed to supporting the Island’s Indigenous community through employment and training opportunities. Local Indigenous community members make up 15 per cent of our staff and a 2010 economic study confirmed fifty indigenous families were directly supported by the mining industry on NSI.
We are passionate about preserving sites of cultural significance to the Island’s Indigenous community including birthing sites, burial sites, bora rings, midden sites and geographical features such as lakes, creeks, hills, and trees.
Our company is proud of the Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP) we have developed in consultation with Native Title claimants for NSI and surrounding waters. This plan, co-signed by the Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders in Council in 2006, preserves sites of significant cultural heritage on NSI.
We are also working towards an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) over our lease holdings to ensure our Native Title obligations are met and the entire Indigenous community can benefit from the mining operations on NSI.
