Our Environment
Sibelco Australia is a world leader in rehabilitation processes and progressively rehabilitates landforms, native vegetation and reconstructs ecosystems to achieve long term sustainability on North Stradbroke Island (NSI).
Our goal is to restore mined land to a sustainable ecosystem, providing sufficient numbers and diversity of plant and animals species to allow habitats similar to those existing prior to mining to redevelop.
The company’s commitment to the environment can be seen prior to mining commencing through our pre-mining surveys.
Our extensive environmental management and monitoring program incorporates water quality, air quality, noise, fauna and flora.
In 2008, the company was awarded the prestigious Queensland Government Resources Industries Sustainability Award. This award presented by the Environmental Protection Agency (now Department of Environment and Resource Management) recognises outstanding performance in environmental management and rehabilitation. It was awarded to Sibelco Australia for developing scientifically robust rehabilitation criteria.
Sibelco Australia was the first Queensland mine, and the second mine in Australia to develop and have approved rehabilitation criteria.
